The benefits of an overhead hoist far out way those of a mobile
hoist and can save money in the long run.
The following will outline some points to support this.
Mobile
Hoists
Mobile
hoists are cumbersome and require floor space to store.
They
are often shared with other departments, resulting in time wasted
locating the mobile hoist.
There
is a tendency for staff to manoeuvre or transfer a person in the
mobile hoist to get to the desired location; this can result in
pushing and pulling the load, which can lead to muscular-skeletal
injuries.
Mobile
hoists are difficult to wheel over carpeted areas.
Their
use can be limited, e.g. difficulty transferring from room to room,
through doorways.
Mobile
hoists generally tolerate less load capacity than overhead hoists,
therefore limiting its use to certain clients.
Overhead
hoists
Overhead
tracking is attached to the ceiling so the hoist does not take up
floor space.
The
hoist is easy to locate, maximising valuable time.
There
is reduced risk of muscular-skeletal injury; together with an appropriate
sling, the overhead hoist does the work for you.
Can
promote user independence.
Overhead
tracking can be connected to the ceiling (subject to survey) and
can cover several rooms, providing greater flexibility.
